In a designathon [a design hackathon], children (aged 8 - 12) come together to tackle issues that matter to them. Together, they . . .

  • collaborate to envision and develop creative ideas

  • apply simple technologies and build prototypes

  • present their solutions to an audience

CHILDREN ARE
DESIGNERS

How it Works

During a designathon children are guided through a 7-step experiential process, linked thematically to a bigger global challenge such as water scarcity, poverty, biodiversity loss, or citizenship.

Outcomes

By taking part in a designathon, many children discover unlimited possibilities, for themselves and for the world.

Through each designathon, children . . .

  • Acquire 21st Century skills: creative thinking, collaboration and global citizenship

  • Develop an agile mindset by working hands-on with simple electronics

  • Practice presenting to an audience in a supportive environment

  • Feel a sense of agency to take action on issues that matter to them!

Local context, global vision and network

Thousands of children around the world are able to participate in designathons because of our dedicated global network of regional partners and community organizations.

Children in communities around the world can participate in a designathon through local organizations we call Designathon Hubs that are trained by us and our carefully selected Network Partners. This mode of delivery ensures children get involved in the issues that matter most to them.
